BIOMaria Chrisoulakis is a Hobart based artist working primarily in drawing. Her practice centres on the human figure, exploring quiet traces of lived experience through close observation and a considered approach to the body.
Working predominantly with graphite on paper, Maria is interested in drawing as an act of attention; slowing down to observe the details, objects and moments that often go unnoticed in everyday life. Her practice has developed through a sustained interest in portraiture and figurative representation, alongside an exploration of lived experience, memory, mortality and the relationship between the body and its surroundings.
Maria is currently completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania, where she is specialising in drawing and printmaking. Her studies have expanded her approach to include, painting, printmaking, audio, video and poetry. Maria has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, including exhibitions in New York, Canada and Italy.
